NODY – Our adopted Orangutan
For father’s day 2009, Project 18 was given the gift of an adoption of a baby Orangutan named Nody. Over the next Twelve months we will add regular information on Nody’s progress so you can all see how such a kind but simple gesture can help save the life of an Orangutan.
Additional Information
What do I receive during my adoption?
For $120 per annum or $32.50 quarterly you can adopt either Ruthie or Nody; and it is tax deductible. With this you will receive:
- A certificate of adoption;
- A photograph of your chosen baby;
- An information sheet about your baby;
- Quarterly updates on his/her progress;
- Our Grapevine newsletter online;
- A gift; and
- All postage is included.
How will the adoption money help the orangutans?
Many orphaned orangutans have been rescued, but they must learn the skills to survive on their own in the rainforest before they can be released back into the wild.
At the reintroduction projects the orangutans are looked after by professional staff. They are checked for diseases and re-accustomed to living conditions in the rainforest – this includes developing climbing skills, learning to find food, and socialisation with other orangutans. This can take many years, so the cost is significant.
With the food and equipment required, as well as the facilities, rescue vehicles and round-the-clock staff to care for the infants and teach them how to survive, the average cost from rescue to release is $6000.
Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation
Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) is a not-for-profit foundation formed by Dr Willie Smits in 1991, and now supported by many sister organisations world-wide.
With help from supporters around the world, BOS has achieved many great successes:
•purchasing thousands of hectares of land to become eternal nature reserves;
•assisting in the rescue of more than one thousand orangutans with many subsequently reintroduced into
the wild;
•managing the world’s largest primate conservation project; and
•educating and providing livelihoods for hundreds of local people.
BOS Australia
BOS Australia is dedicated to protecting all orangutans, whether wild or rehabilitated, as well as their natural habitat.
BOS Australia supports all the major projects presently undertaken by BOS in Borneo. They do this by holding fundraisers, staging awareness campaigns, running education programmes, selling merchandise, and promoting infant adoptions and rainforest sponsorships.
BOS Australia is run entirely by volunteers, ensuring administrative costs are kept to a minimum.

This is the initial information i received about Nody and his adoption:
When Nody was rescued from the illegal pet trade, he was taken to the nursery at Nyaru Menteng where he had round the clock care by a team of babysitters.
Recently, Nody has outgrown the nursery so he was allowed to join the bigger orangutans in Forest School. Here he is learning many new skills from his older, more experienced classmates. It’s been a testing time for Nody though. At first he refused to join in with the others playing in the trees, and clung to his babysitter.
Over time Nody is overcoming his initial difficulties and is now making some orangutan friends.
